Nest Updates – Eaglecrest

Here's a good video of Wilma, the Canada Goose at the Eaglecrest nest, and the hatch of her 7th egg today. That used to be a hawk nest, but the hawks flew away, so 'Fred & Wilma' moved in. Well, really just Wilma-she seems to be the only one ever on the nest. But supposedly Fred is always nearby.

The seventh egg had been laid a couple of days after incubation started so there was worry that its hatch would happen in time for the trek to the pond.

Meanwhile mom, a.k.a. 'Wilma', has been working hard to try to keep the other six, active, goslings under her. Because the newly hatched gosling is so new, the thinking is that mom may try to endure one last night of being buzzed by the Great Horned Owls who also have a nest in this tree. The owls have been brutal on Wilma and cause much worry there.

In this picture I just now captured there appears to be no more room under mom, so this gosling has to be contented to just stick its head into mom's wing. Isn't that fuzzy butt adorable?

Mom may decide to chance the move to the pond before nightfall if last night's latest drama with the owls is still fresh in her goose brain.

You may want to check this West Coast site tomorrow, Saturday, as the move to the pond is definitely impending. There is also a camera on the pond so you won't have to miss a thing!

Will they all make it to the pond??

Eagle updates

Been working hard and trying to sneek peeks at the eagle nests.

Here's a screen capture taken during this morning's sunrise. Dad was not having it with those pesky sparrows!

The Richmond nest's two eggs hatched last weekend 36 hours apart and are doing fine from what I hear.

The Alcoa nest's third eaglet arrived yesterday I believe, and the eggs, two of them last time I checked, at the White Rock nest were laid later, so hatchings are yet to come.

Decorah is expecting first 'pip' at any time now.

Links and more details later!

Davy Jones

According to Brian Williams, American girls in the late 60's were either a Davy Jones girl or a Micky Dolenz girl, whereas Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith were, "not so much, as they were more of the brooding, artist, type".

The Monkees

Well, for the record, I thought Peter Tork was adorable, and I got a kick out of knowing that my personal favorite played 18 different instruments (at the time) and was super-smart.

Peter Tork, according to Micky Dolenz is a: "Bohemian" with a, "heart of gold, tortured, compassionate, sometimes annoying, intellectual, altruistic, and one of the kindest men I have ever known".

And his dressing room was, "Wall-to-wall musical instruments and assorted paraphernalia. Keyboards, guitars, amps, microphones, tape recorders, sheet music. You never had to look around for Peter. If you needed him you could always find him hunched over his Fender Rhodes practiciing a Bach Three-Part Invention".

Davy was the cute front man with the sexy accent. Sorry to see him go.

Mom flies in ‘from the left’

Lol - it's just a short one, but long enough to see the egg roll, the face plant and the 'shimmy'!

If you're in the mood, here's a great clip that includes mom's now famous backwards landing.

The nest is full – Decorah update

Mama bald eagle laid her third egg last night.

That chirping thing she does when she's having her contractions... (see 6 mins into video).

Their fifth nest is officially full now. Apparently, it's not typical for a pair to have 3 eggs, and this pair has successfully raised 3 eaglets in the past 3 years (their first year they just had 2). It might have something to do with that handy fish hatchery across the way.

Empire State Building lights up for Gary Carter

NYC's Empire State Building lights up in Mets colors for Gary Carter 2/17/12

I think this was his last up at bat before retiring (at the end of his second stint with the Expos):

 From the Montreal Gazette:

Editorial: Gary Carter: The Kid who made Montreal smile

Gary Carter is mobbed by admiring fans on Expos camera day in 1983

Gary Carter

This guy brought fun to Montreal.

I forgave him for playing for the Mets. But I'm still pissed about how Tim Wallach got a perm after Gary did. Tim was never the same after that.

Carter played his first 11 seasons with the Expos, masterfully handling the pitching staff and leading the club to its only postseason appearance in 1981. The Expos traded him to the New York Mets on Dec. 10, 1984, in exchange for shortstop Hubie Brooks, catcher Mike Fitzgerald, outfielder Herm Winningham and pitcher Floyd Youmans.

Carter won a World Series with the Mets in 1986.

Carter had a .991 fielding percentage as a catcher and 11,785 career putouts. He ranks sixth all-time in career home runs by a catcher with 298.
